And if we were to examine the lives of the prophets and the righteous people, we can clearly see how they were raised with the sweetness of faith, how they tasted the sweetness of faith in their heart, and how they remained the richest of the people no matter the circumstances in which they lived. Our Prophet ﷺ was the richest of all the people in his heart. He was the richest, even though he could not find a single date in his home for which to eat. The Prophet ﷺ, after Salat al-Fajr, he would go into his home in the homes of all his wives looking for something to eat, and he wouldn't find anything in all of their homes for which to eat. And so he would decide to fast ﷺ, and he would remain fasting for the rest of the day. And even when it would come time to break his fast, he still could not find even a date to eat, nothing to eat in order to break his fast. So he would break his fast with a few sips of water and finding no food for which to fill his stomach. This is the Prophet ﷺ, and despite this, he is the richest of the people. And Allah ﷻ says in the Qur'an, وَوَجَدَكَ عَائِلًا فَأَغْنَى That he found you poor, and then he enriched you. And Allah ﷻ is not speaking about richness and poverty in relation to wealth. That Allah did not enrich the Prophet ﷺ with wealth and with castles or even with bread and with dates. But rather Allah ﷻ enriched him with pleasure in his heart, with contentment with Allah ﷻ. He made his heart independent from all of this world. And he ﷺ would tie the rocks upon his stomach to support him against the pains of this world and the pains of hunger. Meanwhile, Allah ﷻ would give his Prophet the choice between being a king and a Prophet. Like the Prophet ﷺ, a Prophet who was a king who has power and luxuries and wealth or to be a slave Prophet. And the Prophet ﷺ said, فَاخْتَرْتُ أَنَكُونَ عَبْدًا نَبِيًّا So I chose to be a slave Prophet. And once out of the pain of hunger, the Prophet ﷺ would leave his home roaming the streets to get his mind off of his hunger. And as he was roaming, he saw Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه also roaming the streets. So the Prophet ﷺ said to him, مَلَّذِي أَخْرَجَتْكَ مِن بَيْتِكَ يَا أَبِي بَكْرِ He said, what is it that has caused you to leave your home, O Abu Bakr, at this hour? And Abu Bakr said, يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ الْجُوعِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ He said, it is hunger, O Messenger of Allah. So there they were, the two best people of this Ummah roaming the streets at night because they had nothing in their homes to eat. And then they find Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه also roaming the streets at night. And they say to him, the Prophet ﷺ asks him as well, why are you roaming the streets at this hour? And he said, قَالَ الْجُوعَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ He said, it was hunger, O Messenger of Allah. So the three best people of this Ummah roam the streets at night out of hunger to take their minds off of their hunger. And the Prophet ﷺ said to them, وَالَّذِي نَفْسِ بِيَدِي لَا أَخْرَجَتْنِي مِن بَيْتِ إِلَّا مَا أَخْرَجْتُكُمَا He said, by Allah, nothing removed me from my own home except what has removed the two of you. And as they are in this state, one of the Ansar see the three of them out there and finds out that they are outside because of this hunger. So he insists that they come to his home and eat at his house. And he decides to slaughter one of his goats. And the Prophet ﷺ says to him, إِيَّاكَ وَالْحُلُومُ He said, don't kill the one that is producing milk for you. And so he finds a small sheep that he has and he slaughters the sheep and he cooks it for the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr and Umar. And so they sit down and they eat this food. And perhaps they haven't eaten for days after they've struggled and there's no food in their homes. And they sit and they eat. And as they finish eating, the Prophet ﷺ said to them, وَالَّذِي نَفْسِ بِيَدِي لَتُسْأَلُنَّ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عَنْ هَذَا النَّعِيمِ He said, by the one in whose hand my soul is in, you will be asked on the Day of Judgment about this pleasure. He says this to two people who have struggled in poverty, who left their homes and their wealth in order to migrate for the sake of Allah ﷻ. And yet when they finally eat, when they finally get some food in their stomach, the Prophet ﷺ reminds them that there will be a day that they stand in front of Allah ﷻ and they will have to answer for that blessing that they have just experienced. This is what made their hearts rich, rich in their souls, that they always recognize the blessings that Allah ﷻ blessed them with in every moment of their life.
